Campaign for Real Beauty

drgreggjantz | 21 November, 2006 20:38

As any of you know that are reading this blog, our society (beyond just North America) puts an overemphasis on looks, beauty, clothing, etc. This is especially true for women (but it even affects men now).

Look at this study done by Dove (soap company):
90% of all women 15-64 worldwide want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance (with body weight ranking the highest).

67% of all women 15 to 64 withdraw from life-engaging activities due to feeling badly about their looks (among them things like giving an opinion, going to school, going to the doctor).

61% of all women and 69% of girls (15 to 17) feel that their mother has had a positive influence on their feelings about themselves and their beauty.

More info on Ana Carolina Reston

drgreggjantz | 21 November, 2006 07:31

Ana Carolina RestonBecause of some comments, I have added another picture of Ana Carolina Reston that shows her thinner. It is hard to find pictures of her just before she died because of various factors.

More important than how she looked before she did, is her BMI when she died. Reston's BMI was just 13.5 while the World Health Organization considers anyone with a BMI below 18.5 underweight. A BMI below 17.5 being one of the criteria for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and a BMI nearing 15 is usually used as an indicator for starvation.

Looking at Depression Differently, Whole-Person Approach

drgreggjantz | 14 November, 2006 17:59

Many times, way too often, doctors and psychologists turn to prescription drugs as the solution to depression. We recognize that at times because of chemical imbalances a person will need to take medication to help them overcome depression symptoms.

However, we believe there should be a whole-person approach to dealing with depression. The whole-person approach is based upon recognition of the unique components of an individual’s life and how these components interweave to form the whole person.
