Teen Use of Eating Disorders Web Sites on the Rise

drgreggjantz | 13 December, 2006 19:56

Teen Use of Eating Disorders Web Sites on the Rise I just read an article on the internet titled Teen Use of Eating Disorders Web Sites on the Rise. The article was in regards to a study about teens with eating disorders and their use of the Internet. This article had some disturbing statistics.

According to the study, nearly half of all the teens had visited an eating disorder Web site. The bad news was that 41 percent had visited a pro-eating disorder Web site, while 36 percent had visited a pro-recovery Web site. Twenty-five percent had been to both types of sites.

Ninety-six percent of the teens who went to pro-eating disorder sites reported gleaning new weight-loss or purging information from the sites. More alarmingly, 46 percent of those who went to a pro-recovery Web site said they had gained new information about different weight-loss techniques.

Users of pro-eating disorder Web sites were significantly more likely to have required hospitalization than teens who didn't frequent those sites - 3.9 percent versus 1.1 percent, respectively.

This is another reason why parents should monitor what their children are reading on the Internet. Parents who have a child who has a known eating disorder need to be alert to the dangers of pro-eating disorder sites.

I hope that if there are any teens reading this blog that they will understand how dangerous purging and unhealthy weight loss can be to their well being.

I've read several articles about how terrible these sites are, and they foster destructive and unhealthy behaviours. I am personally involved in an ED site but not for the reason many girls are. I think it is ridiculous when girls come looking/asking for "ana tips"- there's a huge difference between true EDs and wanna-be girls. I felt completely alone and to find out that there were others who struggle every single day with the same things as me encouraged me alot. It's like a support network. And we also remind each other that recovery is not a four letter word.
